Nach seiner Goldschmiedelehre zog es ihn hinaus in die Welt – über Hamburg und Hannover ins Zentrum der Goldschmiedekunst jener Zeit: St. Petersburg. Nach seiner Rückkehr gründete „Russ Carl“, wie man ihn nach seinem Russland-Abenteuer gerne nannte, 1847 das Unternehmen J.C. Wild IX in Idar. Schnell baute er Geschäftsbeziehungen mit England, Indien, Ceylon (heute Sri Lanka), Hong Kong, Australien, Südafrika und Amerika auf und legte damit den Grundstein für einen Firmennamen von Weltruf.
